January is Dementia Awareness Month, a time to deepen our understanding, reduce stigma, and strengthen support for individuals living with dementia and those who care for them. Dementia affects not only memory, but also communication, emotions, relationships, and daily life. With growing awareness comes greater compassion and a stronger, more connected community.
Living with dementia can be confusing and isolating. For caregivers, it can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Awareness helps us recognize that dementia is not just a diagnosis, it is a lived experience that deserves patience, dignity, and understanding. Small acts of kindness, clear communication, and community support can make a meaningful difference.
At Kneehill Regional Family and Community Support Services, we believe awareness leads to action. When people understand dementia better, they are more equipped to support loved ones, neighbours, and friends, and to ask for support themselves.
Dementia Experience – January 22
To help build empathy and understanding, we are offering a Dementia Experience on January 22. This interactive experience is designed to give participants a glimpse into what it may feel like to live with dementia. Through guided activities, participants can better understand the challenges related to memory, sensory changes, and communication. This experience is open to anyone who wants to learn more, including caregivers, family members, professionals, and community members.
Dementia Support Group – January 28
Support is essential for those caring for someone with dementia. Our Dementia Support Group, taking place on January 28, provides a safe and welcoming space for caregivers to connect, share experiences, and learn from one another. The group offers emotional support, practical strategies, and reassurance that caregivers are not alone on this journey.
Awareness Builds Stronger Communities
Dementia awareness is about more than information. It is about creating environments where people feel seen, supported, and valued. It is about encouraging conversations, reducing judgment, and reminding caregivers that their well-being matters too.
This Dementia Awareness Month, we invite you to learn, listen, and engage. Whether you attend an event, share information, or simply approach someone with a little more patience and compassion, every step helps build a more dementia-friendly community.
